I'm looking into biting on the hard body glidebait/swimbaits, I'm looking at purchasing a Slammer and S-Waver 168... my only problem is I don't typically use casting gear. I'm curious if I can get away with one of two spinning rods I would purchase to try these techniques. Dobyns Sierra MH or H. They are rated at MH 1/4oz - 1oz and H 3/8oz-1 1/4oz. 

 

Would I be able to get away with throwing these bait on these rods and what size spinning reel would work for throwing this size bait or should I just bite the bullet and start to get comfortable with casting setups?

If you want to throw baits that weigh an ounce and a half and more, why are you looking at rods that are only rated up to one and a quarter ounce? You should be looking at musky rods. 

Im not saying spinning gear wouldnt handle it (surf setups throw baits much larger than that slammer), but you are better served by tossing those swimbaits on casting gear. You need to learn how to use a baitcaster anyway. It Will open up other techniques as your fishing progresses.

I'd have to say I agree with you on that.

The 1st item to consider is what line do you plan to use? Line diameter dictates the spinning reel size. If you plan to use braid then a 3000 size reel would be OK, mono or FC a larger 5000 size to handle .015 to .017 diameter lines.

Swimbaits are big lures lures that bass strike and bite down onto to kill it requiring enough hook setting force to move the lure so the big treble hooks penetrate. Along with being heavier lures you need a rod that cast easily and get a hook set.

Take a look at Okuma inshore rods and reels looking at recommended line size and lure weights; CJ-55S

If you are looking into a casting setup. Look at G. Loomis E6X Heavy Mod/Fast 7’4”.  It’s rated 1/2oz to 2oz.  I use it for swim treble hook baits like the s waver, and whopper ploppers. Very versatile rod, good action. Could even use it for single hook lures.  Pair it up with a reel of your liking and have a good time. 

I will at times throw an S-Waver 168 on (casting) rods rated around 1-1.25oz at the top end.  It's not ideal but I just cast with a gentle lob.  Once the lure is in the water it fishes with very little resistance, so your H rod should handle it.  If you just want to fart around with one then I think it would be fine.

 

They are fun lures to fish, you can make them do a lot of stuff with the right line/rod movements.  

The OP is inquiring about spinning rods rated for 2 oz lures and few are availble under 8' long. How suggestions....

This was hard to find,  BPS offers the Shimano Teramar Southeast Spinning Rod 7' or 8' rated at 1/2oz to 2oz Heavy Mod/Fast...  Has good reviews and is affordable.  As for reel size, I'd throw braid, 50-65lb so a 4000 of your choice.

What model 7' did you find with 2 oz rateing?

Yes, TMS-F7H is the model number. The 7'5" may be a good choice but MH @ 1. 1/2 oz.
