Fiberglass vs. Aluminium

Featured Replies

I prefer aluminium over fiberglass, the main reason is because of the rocky areas I fish. Bouncing off rocks is something I would never dream of doing in a fiberglass boat.  All the pro's seem to use fiberglass and I can't remember ever seeing an aluminium boat in the professional T's and wondering why? What are the pro's of fiberglass over aluminium?

Thanks for your input!

Most Pro tournaments have a length & horse power minimum; There have been a few instances where aluminum boats were allowed    ;)

I wonder why they set a minimum?  I can understand a maximum, but if you can win the classic in a float tube, so be it!

Length and horsepower minimums are for safety. You cannot expect a coangler paying his way in and not being allowed the opportunity to fish out of a  competitive boat. Each boat must have raised decks front and rear. Have a live well that will sustain a live limit of fish from each competitor. Live wells must be seperated. That's just a few reasons.

I was fishing the upper end of the Allegheny river as far as I dared once. (because of the car sized boulders) Next thing you know a guy in a aluminum boat with a jet outboard came flying upriver. I have to admit I was at that point a bit envious. He was able to get places I only wished I could. Aluminum definitaly has it's good points!

Their are competative Aluminium boats out there! Look at Tritions 19fters w/ 200 Mercs.  Those are allowed in Pro Tournaments.  In BassMaster Mag a few months ago the winner was using a Aluminium Trition.  The reason most pros are using fiberglass is because they handle better in rougher water, are generally faster,  and lets face it most fiberglass boats look better on tv.

Some lakes are just loaded with hazards like Fork.  Unless you're real proficient at fiberglass hole repair, it's sensible to go aluminum.

There are businesses at Fork that "SPECIALIZE" in hull repair, due to demand   :o;)

Stability.

x2, I have owned both and prefer fiber-G over aluminium. I want say never but if the good Lord is willing, I want go back to aluminium. I will miss those fish in skinny water and fish deeper. Get good insurance.
