Trolling motor poundage vs speed.

Featured Replies

I am looking at purchasing a transom mount Minn Kota for my 14' aluminum v-hull.  I have a powerdrive 40lb on that front and an old 28lb motorguide on the back.  With both wide open I clock at 3.7 MPH via GPS. Will upgrading to a 50 in the back get me more speed or just more thrust to help with wind, current, etc.  I really don't want to spend the money on a big motor in the back and will just buy a 30lb if the 50lb won't move me faster.

Thanks,

Andy

Search the forum lots of good post about this topic. You may want to try a different prop on the rear tm first. They aren't designed for speed.

I just purchased a Minn Kota 50.  ;) Havent put it in the water yet. Will make a posting and let you know how it does on the GPS by itself on my 16 ft. Lowe Alum Boat. Should be able to do it tommorow afternoon.

If speed is what your after, I wouldnt put a TM on the back at all, get yourself a decent little used outboard, something small, it will move you along alot better than a trolling motor, but alas gasoline is so pricey!

Do your self a favor and shop around for a used small outboard , at least a six horse.

I have a 10.2 BassHound with a MinnKota Endura 55 on the back and a Endura 28 on the front, and with both wide open, I get 4.2mph on my gps.

Their is an electric boat Bass Club in our area and some of those guys spend thousands of dollars on trolling motors to go .5MPH faster.  If you get to 4 MPH with your trolling motor, you are doing great.  If you get to 5 you are at the top of the class and if you get 6MPH you are the fastest.  The difference between 4 and 6 is A LOT of $$$$$$

That is exactly the kind of post I was looking for, Thank you.  I will just save some money and get a 30 for $80 or a 40 for $125 after rebate.

I've never thought of a trolling motor in the terms of speed.
