I don't know about the 45 horse Merc. My brother and I both have older 50 horse Merc. he has had his for years and I just picked mine up last year. He told me that there is a pin that may drop out when you pull the lower unit off. It's a real pain to get back in when putting everything back togeather. I chickened out and let the marina do it.

water pump, tune up and lower unit oil changed $122.00

Not having to worry did I do it right was worth the money.

Good luck if you try it on your own.

Wow that's a heckuva deal  :). Maybe we'll just let the shop do ours...

I just changed the impeller on my 25 mariner.  Definately a 2 person job to get the linkage lined up and the pin back in place.  Also had to pull the starter to get to the pin, not a big deal. She's a peeing now.

I got it done I never seen a pin when I pulled it. I took the lower unit to the shop so I could match up the impellers to get the right one and after I prid on it for a good 45 min. and gave up the shop guy put two screw drivers on it and pulled it right off like it was no big deal. I got it back together and am going to try it out this week end wish me luck.
