oil pump and transom saver question

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I rebuilt the carbs on my 90HP Merc today, and while pulling them off the Oil lines basically crumbled.  So I replaced them, all fine and dandy, but I was wondering, do the oil lines need to be primed or anything to get the air out of the system?  If so, how do you do that?  Or will just running it on a hose push all the air through??

Second question.....what is the correct angle for the motor to be at when traveling?  I got a new transom saver, and wasn't sure what the proper setup should be.  Here is how I have it now...

Thanks!!!

Scott, I can't provide any info on the oil lines because I have no experience in that area.  As for the transom saver, based on your photo you have a Tracker, as do I.  The angle of the motor in your photo is very consistent with the angle of my 60HP when resting on the saver.  Tip:  Lower the motor until it rests on the saver and then continue lowering until it just begins to "seat" itself on the saver, then stop.

as for the transom saver. tha looks ok to me. you  could lower it, I see your saver is adjustable, but you want to make sure you have enough rooom under the motor so you don't hit the road while driving. not just level, but when you changing angles. like coming out of a parking lot, or down/up a hill from level. tye motor looks good.

on yhe oil? is tyour tank on the motor? if it is it is gravity fed, so the air would raise to the top and there would be none in the sysytem. at least that is it in my brother 125 merc.

Good deal, thanks for the tips guys!   I think im going to lower the transom saver one more notch and see how it looks...

As for the oil issue, i actually got oil through most of the new lines already, but just not the one line that goes in between the pump and what looked like a smaller version of the fuel pump.  its only about 2"-3" of line there, so not much.  I guess ill just premix the first tank, see if i can find a bleeder screw in one of the assemblies and run it out?

As you suggested, premix the first tank, you should always do this when you mess with your oil injection, provided it's not a DFI motor. With DFI motors the fuel does not go through the crankcase so premixing does no good. If you get an oil alarm, and it's not DFI, don't worry about it, it should clear in a short time and it's not hurting the motor.

If fell you need to run a transome saver, leave it up like you have it, that places the motor closer to it's balance point. Also when bring the motor down onto transome saver, keep triming it down until the two trim cylinder rods are fully retracted and you hear the pump motor just start to change tune and you can tell the hydraulics has it held down. With the tilt cylinder rods extended like they are, the transome saver is basically doing nothing but riding back there, a hard bump and the motor can still bounce. I don't recommend putting a strap around the motor to hold the end of the transome saver either. First time you forget to remove it, it can get turned around and into the prop, screwing up the prop and the TS. At least without the strap, you only loose the TS. Properly cinched down, it will not come out going down the highway.

Don't mess with those black motors much and don't know of any bleeder system.  Safest bet is just to premix a tank after working on it.  That way if an air pocket is traped in there somewhere, it will pass through without causing an "OH CRAP" response if the oil warning goes off.

good deal, its not a FI motor, so premix it is!!  thanks!

so do you know if there is a bleeder screw type thing, or will just running it on premix push any air through?  its a 1990 Merc 90HP.

Thanks for the transom saver info too!!  I'll run the pegs down before takin it out for the shakedown.  ;)
