Power poles?

Featured Replies

What are the poles I see attached to the transom next to the motor? I have only noticed them in the last few months watching some of the fishing shows.

Are they poles that can be driven down into the bottom to hold you in place instead of an anchor? How deep could they be, the pole looks like it only sticks up 4 feet or so above the transom.

Thanks,

JT

They sell a 6' and an 8' model.  I was thinking of purchasing one until I saw the price.  They are quite proud of them.  :)

I had those same thoughts. I have since bought a Manual Pole 8ft version. It cost about $20 at home depot and about 30 minutes of whittling to sharpen one end.

I am actually surprised how well it holds after you push it in to the bottom.

Surfer, that's a great idea!   Did you attach a PVP pipe or something to your boat to push the pole through?  I'm salivating at the idea :)

Yup, super expensive and totally electric with remote control, etc. but worth the cash?  Not unless you get your gas for free or just have more cash than you know what to do with.  These are big with the salt water guys who flats fish as that's mostly sight fishing.

You can do the same thing with the pvc pipe and a good bungee cord hooked to one of your cleats.  If it's windy, use 2 and drop $40 worst case......   They work.

I haven't used any sort of vertical sleeve pipe on my boat yet. I simply stab into the mud and tie on to it. I am sure it would fail in heavy wind, but in light variable winds that tend to switch and spin your boat around it is just what the doctor ordered.

I have seen a commercial product that is basically a flexible fiberglass pole you stab into the mud. The video for it showed it worked pretty good so I just duplicated it. Truth be told mine is an aluminum pipe. but I am sure anything will work.

I have also seen comercial dock builders with large pontoon boats do the vertical sleve on bow and stern with a 3" diamiter tall pipe.  It held solid like a floating dock.

I modified my push pole to solve this problem. It has a removable end that I remove, slide in a sharpened point, push into the bottom and a small cleet that I attached that works great.
