To rattle or not to rattle in the grass

Featured Replies

I fish a lot of heavily pressured ponds with clear water and lots of submerged vegitation. I’m planning on trying to fish down in the roots of the vegetation with jigs and Texas rigs. My question is would you recommend starting off with jigs/worms with rattles or without rattles?

Normally I think of rattles being more for muddy water but I’m curious if it will help the fish find the lure down in the grass. Where would you start?

I don't use a rattle on my jigs or worms but I know people who swear by them, even in clear water. I would start with out them and if you can't catch anything put a rattle on it.

This probably won’t help much, but...

I fish clear waters, with visibility in the 3 to 9 ft usually.

I have experimented with rattles for years now and have not noticed any difference in catch rate +/-.

It works both ways. You’ll have to experiment on your own, to come to a conclusion I believe.

I use to buy jigs with rattles, but then I never noticed any difference in the bite from the jigs that didn't have rattles. Now I don't use rattles at all.
