Hello everyone!  New to the site.  Been lurking a bit, reading posts and whatnot.  So I'm always on the lookout to try something new and/or different.  Got it in my head a couple months ago that (artificial) hellgrammites might be the new hot bait to use this spring.  So, like any NORMAL fisherman I bought quite a variety of different shapes, sizes(1.5" and 3') and colors in every combination I could find.

 

The main question is, how do I rig these things up?  Did a quick search on here and read that "ned heads" are pretty popular, but for some reason cant picture that setup in my head.   I was thinking texas weedless, and/or jigging under a bobber, and/or drop shot rig.  

 

I'll mostly fishing for large mouth bass here in NC, but am planning a trip back home to Buffalo,NY for the smallmouth bass run in the creeks and lake in May.

 

Any advice on rigs, techniques and even pictures would be great!

I rock hop the Potomac below Great Falls VA and one hellgrammite will easily last for at least five fish. I hook them right thru that plate behind the head on a cheap weedless eagle claw hook. A dozen hellgrammites will usually last me all day.

I can tell you this for sure, they are dynamite on a drop shot.

I love the 3" soft Hellgrammite baits. The BPS version is great.

Smallmouth and Largemouth go nuts for one wacky rigged on a wacky jighead.

They are excellent drops shot baits, and fished on a split shot rig too.

 

There's also a guy on Ebay that sells a great one in bulk that seems like it's the same as the BPS version.

A Poor Boys Erie Darter is one of my favorite lures to drop shot. My dad would always refer to those as a hellgrammite which I had no clue what it was until Googling it. Anyways, nose hooked on a drop shot works well for that.

I recently picked up some nikko hellgrammites.   Haven’t fished them yet but I heard they really produce and they last

When Lunker City came out with thier Hellgie soft plastic hellgramite back in the early 80's we split shot rigged them with good success before drop shot rigs were popular.
