Steering Torque Tab

Featured Replies

I installed a new stainless prop on my 90 hp Merc a couple years ago and noticed I get some steering torque to the right at top end.  I want to fix this. It is even worse on sharp turns on the lake to the point if I let go of the wheel, the boat would do a 360. :) What way do I need to adjust the steering tab on the cavitation plate to compinsate so much torque? ( If I am standing at the back of the motor.) It wants to go right on top end if that helps. Thanks!

It can't be fixed.  It's liable to get you killed.  I'll be there tomorrow to take that threat to public safety off your hands.

Good question. I've been meaning to post that same question.

The only difference is my boat pulls to the left and high speeds.

I'm looking forward to the answer.

Standing at the back, loosen the bolt holding it and turn it towards the left.  This creates resistance to the left and hopefully will counteract your right hand torque.

In the meantime, go ahead and let go of that wheel.  Doing 360's on a cool spring morning can be quite exhilerating.   :)

I've had success by adjusting and also just removing the torgue adjuster. Every boat is a little different.

I don't reccommend removing the trim tab. It also is a sacrificial anode that needs to be on the motor. I have a flat trim tab due to an oversize prop on my boat. The blades were hitting it so I changed it out. If you have hydralic steering you can run a motor with a flat trim tab. Also, if the boat is set up properly you can run without it. Just replace it with a flat one so it will continue to protect any metal that makes contact with the water.

My boat does well with either a flat or fin type anode if I trim out correctly. Trimmed out just right I can go straight down the lake without a hand on the wheel. I say this because with the new prop you might be off just a tad with the trim.

I called Mels marine for a key switch and while I was at it, I asked them about the trim tab. They told me to move the rear of the trim tab to the opposite side of the turn. In other words, if it pulls to the left, you put the trim tab to the right. They also told me to do it only 1/8 inch at a time as it make a huge difference.

      That's the definitive answer.

Thanks guys!!  I will give it a shot.

Cart, I'm not ready to do doughnuts at 6:00 am in the morning.  Maybe after a couple cups of coffee. LOL!! ;D  Maybe I should try it and see how good a boat it is.  I can see it now, me and the dog flying out of the boat.

The boat I had that ran best with no torgue fin, got a nice hack saw job and replaced the plate nice and smooth.

Don't be afraid to try it one run will hurt nothing.
