Fluke Trouble

Featured Replies

I used zoom flukes on a guided fishing trip a couple of weeks on the new river and killed the smallies. Now that i am back home i am trying to use flukes more but when i twitch them they just do big circles and dont swim right what am i doing wrong.

please help!!!!

Do you have it rigged right? What kind of hook are you using? I like to use a Gamakatsu EWG 3/0 hook, with the original big ZOOM super fluke. Make sure you have the eye of the hook in the fluke... That has always seemed to give it a better action, IMO.

You need to make sure that the hook is straight down the middle of the fluke. After you are finished putting the hook in the fluke should look exactly like it does without the hook. No bends.

Good call Flue and Georgia.  I would add that for me I use 4/0 and 5/0 hooks.  They seem to just fit with the flukes and they help get the fluke down in the water, not to mention casting distance.

Big circles arent a bad thing.  Have you seen a dying blue gill or minnow?  They swim around in circles and sometimes dive in circles.

The action and power of your rod can play a big part.  That is to say, I get very different action on the fluke when I use a slower action rod than a faster action rod.  Line weight and type plays a big role as well.  Also, if you are using a leader or swivel, get rid of it.  Tie directly to the hook.

Also make sure the flukes you're using aren't bent. Sometimes they come out of the package this way. If you drop them in boiling water they'll usually straighten out in 30 seconds or so.

I use a wide gap # 5 Owner Ultra Point rigged as straight as I can. 12 " leader and a swivel. I have a hard time with the EWG and struggle to make the bait swim straight. I 90% of the time swim the bait with very small twitches instead of jerking it so it is important that they swim right. The boiling trick is something I have been doing for a couple of years now and it also seems to make the flukes more durable. IMO
