hey just wanted to let you guys know if you live in a really hot area do not leave your battery in the back of your boat. i went to go get my battery so i could charge it up after my last trip last week. and in that one week the battery was in the back of my boat and it collapsed. the only thing i can think is that it was from the heat. cuz it gets really hot in the storage area for the gas tanks and battery storage. that new mexico heat will destroy anything. so ya i wouldnt advise leaving your batteries in a very hot enviroment.

I don't understand collapsed but if the sun load was the culprit why wouldn't it happen to car batteries often?

seriously the one side of the battery collapsed. i was thinking the same thing about car batteries. not really sure why it did it. my guess would  be the sun. becuase it was fine one week ago not its all messed up.

Seriously, since batteries don't GO flat, they discharge, if your battery were to develop an internal short and discharge into itself it can get hot enough to melt the casing.  A high current short like this is extremely rare but not impossible.

i didnt think that it went flat like a tire. i have used many batteries over my life just never had this happen. but thankyou for the post ann marie.

I used to work in a AC Delco battery plant.  Sounds like you got a short and it caught on fire.  Yer lucky it didnt burn up your boat.

 

WE  had two tables of batteries charging  with around 650 on each table burn up because 1 battery shorted out and caught them all on fire.

Ditto on tkite16.  Had the same thing happen to me, but it sounds like yours was alot worse.  My only guess was a short.

hey guys thanks i belive i found out what was wrong and you guys are right. i called my dad up and he said the same thing a short. then it hit me my depth finder cord for the front of the boat got cut somehow and i just left it. well the very front of my bass tracker right where the trollling motor is mounted is metal and i belive that is what the wire was touching thanks guys for the replies.
