Fishing Rod Advice

Featured Replies

Just bought a St. Croix Premier 5ft ultralight, Moderate action. Will the moderate action be okay for fishing trout in a small stream. I plan on using spinners, trout magnets and worms and power bait. Will it be okay or should I look at a fast action instead, not that i want too, let me know thanks!!

Should be good. Make sure you match the line and lure weight with it and it should work. Looks like Line is 2-6# test and lures 1/16 - 1/4oz.

Good luck

You'll be fine.  Most trout rods are moderate action for two reasons.  1. trout have softer mouths than some other species and it's easy to yank a hook out of their mouth with a fast action rod, and 2. trout tend to be line shy and a moderate action is a better choice for lighter line.  In this case, the rod does more of the work whereas with a faster action rod, the line does the work.  I fish brook trout any chance I get and for those I like to use a 5'6" UL moderate with 2lb or 4lb test.
