Help Identify Fl exotic...

Guessing large Mayan?  Never seen any with these colors and I caught another identical one the same day.  They just seemed a good bit bigger and lighter in color than other Mayans I’ve caught.

Fish was caught in Weston Fl.

The fish you caught is a Mayan cichlid. Pound for pound they fight harder than a bass and they can be caught on the same lures you use for bass.

How big do Mayan's get?  All the other one's I've caught before were much smaller.   Never caught one in any of these Weston lakes before either.   This was in a gated neighborhood so I'm guessing not many fish it...maybe that's why they were so large.

The one you caught appears to be over 11 inches long which makes it a big Mayan cichlid. Have caught them over 15 inches and well over 2 pounds but the most common size I catch them is 4-11 inches. Mayan cichlids have been caught as far north as Central Florida and they can be found in almost any freshwater body of water in South Florida. They are also called ''atomic sunfish'' as a nickname since they have vibrant colors and fight harder than a sunfish of equal size.

Man, that's a good one...

Those little guys are pretty tough.  I always seem to hook one at the opening of drainage pipes, when we fish snakeheads. - and they always seem to ambush us when the lure is right up on the bank. (less than 3 feet away from where we're standing)  And it's amazing how big of a lure they'll hit.  I caught one once that was about 7-8" long on a 1/2oz spinnerbait with a trailer hook and grub teaser. 😜

So a little more to the story on this fish.  When I caught this fish my friend and I both looked at it and thought, d**n, that looks like it would taste great.   My buddy stopped me from throwinng it back and kept it.   Completley forgot he ate it until he sent me some pics today.

Mind you I would have just filleted that thing completely haha, but here are the pics he sent me. Told me he checked up on the lakes in weston and said they told him they are very clean and free of any toxicity....so he ate the hell out of it.   Said it was like eating a mangrove snapper lol.   I should have just taken it with me.  I threw a second identical one back too.
