Piddly little hooks on my Rapala RipStop. Switch em out?

Recommended Posts

So...bought my first real jerk bait lure - the Rapala RipStop. It noticed it seemed to have smallish hooks but hookups were fine on several smaller fish. Then a hawg grabbed it, swum by the boat to show me his size, then got off. Those piddly little treble hooks Rapala used just didn't seem up to the task. Should I swap them out? Something too much larger will surely upset the action, but I am not going to be very confident continuing to throw it if there is a chance I could hook another good bass.

If I were to go up in size I'd only go up one size...anything more and you run the risk of ruining the action of the bait.

I know you had to replace the hooks on the rapala shadow rap or they could easily straighten out. I thought they put better hooks on the ripstop, but maybe not?

The hooks (and split rings) on the Rapala jerkbaits are notorious for straightening out on fish in no time. I've personally had it happen myself on the first fish I caught on a Shadow Rap (4lb'r). There's really no reason to upgrade to a larger treble hook, but rather just a slightly heavier gauge wire that holds up a little better.

i have caught plenty of 4+lb fish on the smaller ripstop and the hooks were never and issue.  if you want to replace them go with a heavier gauge of the same size but it will change the action for sure.  those baits seem rather temperamental on weight changes

X100!

I could buy the cheapest JB on AliExpress and switch the hooks  out to a Shadow Rap and it would be a huge improvement. I don't get it. Get the guy who specs hooks for Academy lures on it.
