My Whopper Plopper 130 tends to spin the body as well as the tail. Are there any known mods to correct this, or is it not worth worrying about?

I'm guessing this happens at the end of a long cast when you begin your retrieve. If so, slow your retrieve way down until you get the lure closer and your line is at a higher angle. I fish from a kayak and can hardly use a 90 size because it spins too badly. The higher your rod tip above water level, the less likely these are to spin. If it's happening all the time, you probably have some debris caught in the spinning tail segment.

This always happens with a 90 for me as well like @the reel ess mentioned. If it is a long cast and your line is on the water, more than likely, the body will spin with the tail/prop part. If fishing in a boat, I can get away with raising my rod tip a bit to make sure my line isn't touching the water as much. I'm also using mono on this set up. If you are using fluoro then there's your issue. If you're using mono or braid, I would suggest raising your rod tip a bit on those long casts otherwise make smaller pitches out there.

Like Largies said in the next post. I have also had problems with the 90 spinning to the point of I will not fish the 90. I don't have the spinning problems with the 75, 110 or 130 sizes. I feel that you do want to fish the plopper with either mono or braid with a mono leader. Fluorocarbon line especially on a long cast will sink too much and pull the nose down. if there is light chop on the water it will cause the plopper to submerge in the wavelets and spin.

 The 90 has a thinner body and especially if I retrieved it fast it would spin. Any kind debris (bit of weed or algae gunk) caught in the gap between the prop and the lure body will also contribute to the lure spinning. That applies to all sizes of ploppers.

Where did you add the swivel and how does it stop the plopper spinning?

 

The spinning is because the joint that connects the tail to the body is filled with weeds, or some obstruction. If the tail cant spin, the whole bait will spin.

No. I've looked at it very closely, there's a decent gap and it spins freely. Just seems like there's not enough keel weighting to keep it stable, but if others have 130s that run right without spinning there must be either something wrong with the way mine was made, or something wrong with it that's really not at all obvious.

 

The body spins much slower than the tail, but it does spin.

I'd say replace the rear hook with a heavier one but they're already large to the point of overkill.

Try putting some Storm Suspendots or Suspenstrips on the body, maybe that will weight it enough to keep the body stable.

Just like ITG mentioned, I have added swivels to all of mine. It stops the bait from spinning because the swivel does all the spinning for it. Added a Spro Power Swivel with an Owner Hyper Wire Split Ring to the front of my baits and switched out the split rings on the hook hangers as well. I love the stock hooks on the baits. Sticky and stout!

OK, thanks. Not sure how a swivel would stop the bait from spinning, but it would keep the twist out of the line at least.
