Dobyns Sierra 683c or 684c for squarebills/ lipless ?

Featured Replies

Looking for a shorter, less parabolic rod to throw 1.5’s and lipless cranks in close quarters around wood and grass from a kayak. Never really had a dedicated small crank/ lipless rod but want something right around 6’8” for accuracy and shorter rod handle for the kayak. Looking at the Dobyns Sierra 683c and 684c as they’re right where I want to be price wise $150ish and are a bit slower in action than the Champs and Fury’s in spite of being graphite. Does this make sense or should I be thinking more about a glass rod? Thanks for any input.

T/WI have both the rods & do throw rattletraps & squarebills on either one but I don't know about 1.5's. I have been thinking about a Champion XP Dc 634 or 635CB that is what they are designed for but they are $230.

I don't throw much squarebills and I've never thrown or owned any of the those rod options. But I have owned the 685cb and a 705cb. Unless you're looking for a dedicated small crank, no larger and heavier than the 1.5, I'd suggest getting stepping up to the 5 power. The 685 and 705 are pretty limber and can still throw small cranks. I've thrown cranks like the LC 1.5 and Ish Monroe Small Bumpin just fine. Anything heavier than the 1.5 and you'll probably notice that the 3 and 4 power are going to be under powered when casting.
