Please Help Me Pair my combos

Featured Replies

I am normally a Co-Angler and only have 5 or 6 combos so I was able to keep everything under control but now this season I am finally an owner of a bass boat and went overboard buying rods and reels this season. I added 6 new casting combos and now I am not sure what reels to pair with what rods to maximize each combo. I like the technique specific setups and ultimate what I am aiming for. I also have two rods without reels currently so any suggestions on what reels is add would be great to. I also have bulk spools of 12# and 17# Fluoro and 8# and 10# Mono to fill all the reels as well as 2 filler spools of 50# braid. Thank you in advance for helping with this.

Good luck getting suggestions.  One time I posted a similar thread.  Naturally I had my own ideas, but wanted opinions of some others.  Not one answer.

I would suggest listing reel ratios.  It makes a difference to many on which technique to use the reel for.

With that many variables,  your best bet is trial and error. I usually put my favorite reel on the rod I intend to use the most and go from there.

8:1 ratios on heavy rods for jigging/frogs

6:1 on mod action for cranks

Everything else is going to do pretty much the same thing

No one can really tell you. PourMyOwn nailed it.

Btw, pretty decent Arsenal.

That’s a nice arsenal and this is how I would set those combos up for greatest versatility. But keep in mind You are missing a few Crankbait Moderate Rods and a true Flipping Stick. Also are any of those rods spinning ?

7'1" MF (Jigs, Worms, Paddle Tails, SpyBaits up to 1/2oz) + a reel with 27 to 29 inches per turn + 10 to 14lb Mono

6'9" MF (Jigs, Worms, JerkBaits, TopWaters up to 1/2oz) + a reel with 29 inches per turn + 10 to 14lb Mono

6'10" MMF (SpinnerBaits, SquareBills, JerkBaits, TopWaters up to 5/8oz) + 6:1 Concept Z + 12 to 14lb Mono

7'1" MHF (Jigs, Worms, BuzzBaits and maybe PropBaits up to 3/4oz) + 7:1 SV Spool + 40lb to 50lb Braid with optional leader or just straight 17lb Monofilament

6'9" MHF (Jigs, Worms, Toads up to 3/4oz) + 7:1 SX + 40lb to 50lb Braid with Optional leader or just straight 17lb Monofilament

7' MHF (Jigs, Worms, SpinnerBaits, ChatterBaits, BuzzBaits up to 3/4oz) + 7:1 STX + 17lb Monofilament or 17lb Fluorocarbon

7"3" HXF (Punch Rigs up to 1 or 1.25oz) + 7:1 Accurist + 50 to 65lb Braid

7' HXF (Jigs, Frogs up to 1oz) + 8:1 Carbonlite + 50 to 65lb Braid with optional leader

7' HF (Carolina Rigs up to 1oz) + 6:1 KK Spartacus + 17lb Monofilament

6'9" HF (Hollow Frogs up to 3/4 oz) + 8:1 SX + 50 to 65lb Braid

That is quite a few Heavy power rods for the total you have.  Do you fish a lot of jigs?  Or a lot of heavy cover?  What techniques do you use them for?

I have that many Heavy rods plus an older MH that is rated for a heavier weight than any of my Heavy rods.  I seldom use them unless planning on throwing a frog.  I do like the rods so I'm thinking I will start using them where I have been using a MH.

Forgot to congratulate you on the new boat and gear.  Congratulations.  :teeth:  Exciting, huh.  :D

These are only my casting setups. I have 5 spinning combos on deck as well. Also I don't really throw a lot of cranks anymore. Mostly Spinnerbaits and Jerkbaits if I'm not using jigs or plastics.

Thank you. I tend to fish around heavy cover more than most that's why I have such heavier rods. I can tell you it's been a while new expirience fishing front seat compared to back seat, a lot of adjustments.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I know I'm almost 2 months behind but traveling for work and being gone weeks at a time has really taken all my time.
