Different methods to fish trout from a lake shore?

Featured Replies

There's a lake near my home that's regularly stocked with rainbow trout. I'd like to use it to learn and hopefully teach different fishing methods. I'm already familiar with using a bottom rig with floating bait, using a float, and casting spinners/spoons.

What other methods can work? I should mention I'm restricted to the bank of a lake that's shallow and weedy for a few yards. The trout in there never grow past a foot. There's also a few giant common carp that swim by the shore but they never respond to any of my lures.

When I use to fish pay ponds for trout, sometimes I would do pretty good with small crankbaits and jerkbaits. I would just cast out and reel back really slow.

Small rattling baits and jigs worked well too on certain days.

Just trial and error until you find something they wanted.

If the fish are active I like to "twitch" 1/8th or 1/16th ounce jigs for them. If you're unfamiliar with twitching search youtube twitching for coho. It's the same principal just dial your gear way down. If you got a long and light of enough rod to run 2lb mono, micro jigging is really fun too.

@Skunky, looks like you’ve got the majority of the most used methods. I’d add a 1/4oz Kastmaster in silver/blue or gold, the float and fly, and the clear cast-a-bubble with a wooly bugger.  Dough balls for the carp if there are ducks that people like to feed bread. Good luck
