Underspin vs Overspin

Featured Replies

Anyone who has read my comments knows I'm a big fan of jig and spinner combos.  I've never used an underspin jig.  I admit I fail to see what advantage there might be in an underspin.  What are your thoughts?

I have a underspin tied on at all times. I either have a keitech trailer or a fluke jr. I fish it year around. It does seem to do better at different times of year but they are a great lure for suspended fish or to be slowrolled across the bottom in winter.

I just ordered a bunch of different size and type of underspins.  I had decent success with them last year and to be completely honest I forgot all about them.  That will change next time out.

What about tail spins?

Underspins started with Blakemore Road Runner horse head under spins for crappie before bass anglers started using larger models and adding soft plastic trailers. Sworming Hornet fish head under spin with a tiny or jr Fluke trailer changed how bass anglers looked at this class of lure.

Over spins I assume you mean spinner baits, finesse size Beatle spins  to full size ledge busters.

Tail spins started before underspins with Pedigo Spin Rite in the 50's followed by Manns Little George in the 70's.

Inline spinners are front spins, don't forget about them.

You're welcome!

Huge fan of them! They have saved the day for me at times and they have loaded the boat for me other times. I fish em' just like I would a spinner bait, but for me its more of an emphasis on the trailer than with a spinner bait. Example; I fish a spinner bait with maybe a trailer when I want the blades to be the emphasis and I fish and underspin when I want the swimbait to be the emphasis with a little vibration and flash. Hope that makes sense. For the record my go-to style trailers for underspins  are fluke and swimbait style trailers.
