Changes coming to Lake Norman

Featured Replies

one of Lake Normans “hot holes” (warm water discharges) will become a thing of the past when Marshall Steam Plant ends operations due to the environmental issues concerning coal ash. this action may not take place for another ten to twenty years or more, but it’s coming. this will definitely affect wintertime fishing in the middle portion of the lake just south of the hwy 150 bridge. that will leave only the warm water discharge located at the McGuire Nuclear Power Plant, at the southern end of the lake at Cowans Ford Dam.

I used to run NAHRA field trials there and the ash was so thick on the water in the ash basins that the running dogs could not tell land from water and would not know to jump at the waters edge and most of them would nosedive into the ash water. It was quite a site!

What is the problem with the ash?
