Johnpenguin Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 I live in Ohio and plan to make a trip to AEP next weekend to do a little bass fishing. Any Ohioans fish there before? If so, any advice for me? Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 Yes great place to catch the bass of a lifetime in Ohio! Are you taking a kayak? Or another way to get on the water? Just remember the harder you have to work to get to a pond the better the fishing is going to be, also the better chance of that big one! A friend and I fish out of float tubes down there, we can put them on our back like a back pack and hike into ponds. If you are going to fish from shore it will limit your access. We have both caught bass over 6# down there and have seen at least three over 8# caught by others! It is beautiful and relaxing down there, my favorite place to fish in the state. Make sure you wear spray for ticks and check your skin throughout the day, the ticks are horrible! Quote

Do you have any specific lakes I should hit this time of the year?(I’m strictly catch and release so I won’t harm any fisheries) Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 There are so many down there and it is such a huge area even if I tried to explain where the ponds I have best luck are I probably still couldn't get you to them. I don't know road names just drive around looking is what I do! I don't know where you are coming from to get there so hard for me to tell you direction wise where I fish! There is an old road near camp K that has a gate across it, if you hike back that road there are three or four very good ponds, they are a ways back in there and off the road itself! Get one of the maps and just find some ponds, that is the fun of it down there you get to explore and fish! Another tip is fish brutally slow, the grass in those ponds are thick and very dense! I use a lot of soft plastics unweighted while fishing there, like a swimbait (missile shockwave) is what I caught my biggest on down there. It was almost 7#, I cast to shore drag it off the grass and let it fall right at the edge of the grassline and they knock the slop out of it, lizards work good( dark colors), also big creature baits. Also with the swimbait reel a couple times after it hits the water then kill it! Works like a charm! Hope this helps and have a blast man. Quote

FishinBuck07 Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 10 hours ago, Johnpenguin said: Oh one last question for you! Do you know why the bass get so big there? I think it is because most of them are left alone, they were stocked in those ponds a long time ago. They have a chance down there to live longer I think because most people are too lazy to hike to find the more remote ponds. Plus most people I have seen throw back everything down there, you don't have the guys sitting on the shore of them with their buckets keeping everything they catch. Most of the lakes up here in Northeast Ohio have the issue of people keeping everything they catch no matter size or species. Plus it does stay a little warmer down that way all year round compared to up here, may be only a few degrees but that may make a difference, and those ponds are so deep I am sure the water stays warm much longer. Just my opinions, so take them for what they are! Quote

FishinBuck07 Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 Last time I was down there they were gated off! May be open now. I was down there for a day at the beginning of October, didn't do great but hopefully better now. That t shaped one to the left of those I have had some luck in, it is deep bluff walls and clear. If you go past the campground there and over the little bridge take the first road to the right, go out there about a mile maybe and take the first road to the left, there is a nice pond on the right there, they call it the airport pond. There is another pond directly behind it at the back also that not many people know about. Always have good luck in those two! I would add a picture of what I am talking about from Google earth but I don't know how! Sorry! Maybe next year we can meet up down there and fish it a little together! Quote

I fished the T last time I went with no luck. I found it very strange because at night I could see them. As for the little bridge, I don’t remember ever seeing one and can’t find it on the map. I wish I could find the airport! Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 Well I guess it really isn't a bridge, it is where the run off from the camp K lake runs under the road. If you come out of camp K drive and make a right the road I am talking about will be the first on the right, if you go out there a ways you will pass an area where they have oil wells, then pass and area with a cattle trap all on the left, after you pass a clearing out that road where they ran a big pipeline underground, the first road to the left is where the airport pond is. The road that camp K is off of is called Lincoln Hwy, the first road off to the right is township road 2, then the road off that is Ziler ridge, Ziler ridge road is where the airport pond is! Also if you take the road camp K is on out to route 83, take a left on 83 then the first road to the right is called tiltons run, there are tons of ponds out that way, I have caught my biggest fish in those ponds! And just a tip if you see a red sign next to the edge of those haul roads that says no vehicles beyond this point there is most likely a pond in that area, may have to hike to find it though! Quote

I’m assuming these are the pond you are referring to. I know of a seven coming out of there. Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 Yes I believe those are the two I am speaking of! I caught one out of there a few years ago that was just under 4. Quote

FishinBuck07 Posted November 15, 2020 Posted November 15, 2020 Sorry to hear about the car stuff! But congrats on the nice fish man! That is one thing that worries me about being down there is car problems, not much cell service down there to get help if ya need it! Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted November 21, 2020 Posted November 21, 2020 Hope you got the car problems taken care of! I am headed down to AEP tomorrow for a few hours, hopefully I can find some! Quote

FishinBuck07 Posted November 21, 2020 Posted November 21, 2020 Caught a 3 pounder that had the head of a 6 pounder! Skinny and long, then the sky opened up. So it was a short trip. Quote
