How deep for top waters

Featured Replies

I had success in shallow waters (2-4 ft) with top water lures and frogs.

Recently I had an opportunity to go out on the lake in a friends boat, we were fishing anywhere from 4-9 feet.

Just wondering how deep of water you guys have success fishing top waters.

thanks.

I've thrown a top water across a brush pile in 20,30 and 40 feet of water and had tremendous sucess for spotted bass. I really don't think there is a limit on how deep you can fish it.

I've watched smallmouth come zooming up out of 30' of clear water to smash a Zara Spook or a spinnerbait with a LARGE willowleaf waked on top.  If you have it happen once, I guarantee you'll wanna go back for seconds :)

You've been fishing Lanier.

It's true bass will come out of deep water to get a topwater. Spotted bass are more likely to do it than largemouth but I can be done. If you find some susspended bass over a deep hump or brushpile it never hurts to give a topwater lure a try. ( Lost of action, splash and noise.)

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Depends on where you are fishing.

I have caught LMB that were suspended at 4-6ft deep over 20-30ft of open water on a buzzbait. Not something i have found consistent, it just happens sometimes. Only thing i can figure out is the  best area forms a trough and when conditions are right, bass basically trap large schools of shad in there and go on a feeding rampage. When it gets just right, they will be suspended inactive on your graph, run a buzz or sammy over their heads and at least one is going to whack it.

It gets real good when you are throwing a topwater and your partner is throwing a deep diving crankbait and you are both catching good fish in the same spot. It dont get no better. 8-)

Heddon claims the super spook can call fish up from 30 ft of water,.....and it does. :)
