Toledo Bend - Bayou La Nana 4/24/20

Featured Replies

On the water at 7:00 and off at 6:15.

Stained to muddy water with water temp in high 60s to low 70s. Ambient temp high 50s to mid 70s. Started with Blue Bird sky, then high puffy clouds blew in from the north, then Blue bird sky again, then high thin clouds.  Morning wind was a gentle breeze from the south and afternoon wind had Tranquillty Bay white capping. Saw a couple of contrails that were short and disappeared quickly, Buck sez that ain't good. Lake level was about 1' above pool and falling.

Started shallow at community hole, actually what I guess would be a shallow hump close to shore. Bass were actively feeding, busting the surface, chasing baitfish way up in the brush and grass. Could not get my soft plastic back that far, :( , caught zero, nada, zilch, not a thing. Talked with another boat with 2 fishermen and they had the same result. I tried soft plastic, crank bait, topwater and spinner bait. They tried soft plastic and topwater.

Headed off shore in search of structure looking for schools and/or big uns. Wet hooks on a hump with 15 fow on top, old roadbed intersection, break line around a 10' flat and a not well defined point, all in 10 to 20 fow, some had cover (or as Buck sez - breaks). Sorta considered 10' to be shoreline ifn that makes sense. No joy. Was in the area where I saw other boats searching in the past so might have been on the right track. Did this for 4 - 5 hours then the wind picked up, headed back to the Bayou.

An observation. First thing in the morning, on the way to the community hole, I'm running side scan. Saw NO baitfish where I usually see baitfish in 10 fow of water or less. When I went off shore baitfish were hanging out in 20 fow and they were every where! Saw them jumping out of 1 - 2 fow at the island and in 20 fow off shore, no where in between. Hmmm.

Caught 1 in 3 - 4 fow in a cove. Fished the banks to the mouth of coves Threw everything. Briefly thought about throwing the tackle boxes full of lures at 'em but sanity won.

I'll be back.
