Versatile rod and and reel combo

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. Just looking for some input on rod and reel combos. Is it possible to get something versatile enough to fish for bass and occasionally for pike or musky? I typically throw crankbaits, swimbaits, soft plastics, etc. and occasionally live bait. I probably wouldn’t ever be throwing anything giant or super heavy. I’m currently using medium Shakespeare gx2 medium combo but looking to upgrade a little maybe and get faster action. I like the rod ok but the heavier version only comes in a one piece rod and I’m sure there’s better stuff out there. I prefer a two piece 6’6 rod for easier transport and bank fishing under trees and such. Not sure if I should just buy two different ones. Maybe one medium and the other medium heavy with two different reels. I don’t want it to be over kill for bass but also don’t want to regret not being able to get done if I get hooked up with something bigger. I’ve always fished pretty casually up until recently and would like to get a little more serious. I’m not very knowledgeable in regards to reels either. I was looking at the pflueger President combos or the Abu Garcia vengeance but not sure what kind of reel to pair it with. Thanks in advance fine your input.

Nothing super high end. Just decent. Somewhere around the $100 - $200 range depending if ended up getting two different rods and reels. As I type this I’m almost thinking having two separate set ups would be nicer, because I’d probably use different line.

It seems like your wanting a spinning reel correct?

I really like the berkley lightning rod medium actions and a shimano sienna fg. Inexpensive options but ive spent more on other rods and reels and still prefer these

2 different 2 pc set ups? I'm guessing a Mh and a.ML.    To cover wider range of life weights   or a m and a MH

If you want to musky fish than get a dedicated rod for it. Cabelas has a 50-80 rod I think it’s called the predator, should be able to get a 8-8’6” heavy that can handle smaller buck tails, cranks, and smaller rubber. Pair it with a maxcuatro off eBay you can find them new for 70-80. Put some 80lbs suffix 832 on it and you’re set.

Yea spinning is what I typically do I have a bait caster but need to work on it a little more. Appreciate your responses . Sounds like I definitely need to separate set ups.
