Outboard motor w tiller advice needed

Featured Replies

I purchased an older 14' deep v sea nymph boat.  I purchased an older 18hp evinrude outboard motor with tiller for it but it stalled many times and finally the starting cord broke on my first time out.   I am trying to decide if it's worth fixing it or should I cut my losses.   I have a guy recommending me put a johnson 7.5 hp motor on it for $855.   Is 7.5 hp going to push that boat satisfactorily?  Is that too much money for that used manual start 2 cycle 7.5 Johnson?  I feel like the tried and true 9.9 is the starting point and the boat is rated for up to 25hp.  Your advice is appreciated.   Im trying to get my boy on the water without breaking the bank. Last but not least we typically go to resouvoirs to fish so might need to travel some distance or pick our ramps very strategically.

I would put the $100 or so into having a reputable shop look at your Evinrude before buying another used outboard. Dont be too proud to ask them to show you how to run it - I know that would've saved me some growing pains.

Don’t go 7.5. You’ll be disappointed.

Like stayed get that 18 fixed or go with a 25.

I followed your advice and fixed the 18 HP evinrude.  We took it out today and it worked great!!  I am very happy.  My son caught a large moth bass while we were out.  Good times!!
