Stability question

Featured Replies

This summer I am thinking of doing a boat mod and was wondering if it loses stability when you build up. Like if i were to put a deck on the boat at the seat level it seems it would not be very stable. Any comments would help.

Thanks

You will be a little less stable standing above the waterline on a deck than if you were below it standing on the bottom of the boat. The extent really depends on your boat. If you have 1436 then you will be Very unstable. Where as if you have a a 1654 you wont lose as much stability. Typically if you put a deck at the waterline of any boat however, it wont lose to much stability. What kind of boat do you plan on modding?  :-?. This will help us give you a definite answer.

Well I just bought it today for $30, its a 14ft aluminum boat with three benches in it.

Ok it's 14 foot long, what is the width at the bottom

The transom width is 50" and its max width is 58".The bottom is relatively flat (not a v Hull).

It's probably a 1448

That's 14 foot long and 48 inches at the bottom of the transom

Should be stable if you don't get to crazy with the decking above the water line.

$30 bones that was a steal :)

Just rethinking the above though...  It might be a 1436 or a 1440

My 1436 Duracraft is 58 at it's widest and 42 at the Transom top

What make is your boat

If the bottom width is 50 inches than you can most definitely deck it. I would check for leaks and then place it in the water (small pond would be best) to see about where the water line is. You dont want to deck too high above the water level, but with a 50 inch bottom width you dont have to be super conservative.

That was a great price. Stability shouldn't be a problem if you don't go to crazy.

Have no clue of the make, it does have some holes the lady said it lets in some water and i can see a hole. I am going to start by sanding the whole boat and fixing the holes and then repainting.
