Bowmount sonar Leave on??

Featured Replies

Going to put a fishfinder on the bow with the transducer on the trolling motor. My question is do I turn the unit off every time I move/pull the motor or is it OK to leave it on when running between spots?

Thanks in advance

i turn mine off before i move to a different spot, it seems to mess up if i leave it on and not get an accurate reading when i put it back in the water. I do have a lower priced unit which probably doesn't help.

I was once told to turn the sonar off if the transducer was not in the water.

Something about the transducer would over heat.

Never have and never will turn one off when I pull the TM out of the water.  I turn mine on the first time I drop the TM in the water and it stays on until I turn the main power switch off at the ramp to load the boat.

What does the owners manual say?  If you don't have that, then contact the manufacturer. My Hummingbird is supposed to be turned off when not in the water.

x2 - Been doing it this way for years and years (and years) and never had a problem with one in all that time.

Yep, 34 years and never had one go out.

Thanks for the replies. I will read the owners manual and unless they warn against it I will leave on between moves.

Thanks again
