Question for the rod builders...

Featured Replies

I really like my BP Carbonlite rods. They really fish great.

However, I don’t Luke the silly butt cap at all. One of the dials kind of rattles inside the cap, and the the butts are hard with a sharp corner at the back. Leaves a sore spot on me after a day of fishing.

Is there any possibility that the silver portion could be removed and replaced with a generic EVA cap? Or is some type of sleeve over it my only option?

Yea, they are such good looking rods I hate to ruin them with a big rubber cap, ha.

I’d be willing to put some work into changing the cap if it’s possible.

The challenge is getting the parts off without damaging the adjacent parts. There’s most certainly some sort of tenon at the back of the butt grip. I carefully use a Dremel cut off wheel to cut the  aluminum band, hit is with some heat and see if it will peel off. Once you get it off you can measure the tenon and shop for a fit.

Was hoping you’d chime in...

My fear is that there is no tenon under the aluminum, as it houses that silly dial for the line weight display.

The entire rear grip may have to be removed? Which I’d be ok with replacing it with a nice rounded EVA butt, but I’m not sure I’d be able to make it look decent.

Hard part of butt grips is keeping the hole straight and concentric. Use progressively larger drill bits and take your time. Eva stretches a good bit but don’t make it so tight the adhesive gets squeezed out. Another option to save the factory butt is to cut the cap off flush and mount a new one with an insert. I should be able to bore one no problem. Access to full machine shop.

Any advice on removing the Winn butt? (If it comes to that)

Also, any direction on where to purchase a nice grip/butt? And any necessary glue or hardware like a ferrule for transition to the blank?

Thanks.

If I’m looking at it correctly, I should be able to use a one piece EVA butt, and possibly a ring to dress it.

once the old one is off, it’s just a matter of sliding the new grip and ring on and gluing in place?
(I realize that’s over simplified)

This could work as a replacement, correct? The ID of the

butt is about .1” smaller than the blank.

COULD it be as simple as removing the old butt, but leaving the winding check in place.... and seating the new but against the old winding check?

Should be able to pull it off fairly easily. Hold it in boiling water for a few minutes and give it a twist and pull. Or as dvt says cut it with a Dremel or hack saw and peel it off that way too. Definitely an easy diy rod repair.

Does the plan of leaving the winding check in place sound ok? Or should I expect it to come loose with the grip?

if possible, I don’t want to disturb the winding/epoxy/check in front of the grip.

It could go either way depending on how well it’s bonded to the blank or butt. Could try and put a slice with a razor blade where you’d like it to separate. But having to redo the thread and epoxy is not the end of the world and is pretty easy with minimal investment in materials and time.
