How do you keep cats away from your boat/cover?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Off and on we have problems with neighborhood stray cats that climb on the cars and everything else. I've been concerned with them getting on the boat and doing their business on the cover, the carpet, etc. This weekend I pulled the cover back to charge the batteries. When I went out this evening there were green mountain dew droplets on the cover and it stunk to high heaven. Fortunately, it seemed to be on the cover only and not on the carpet or seats. I know once cats start marking their territory it will be a continual thing.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what might keep them away? I've yet to see them actually on the boat, so something that deters when I am not around is probably best. I've heard to give mothballs a try so I'm picking some up tomorrow. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

SnowBass

Get a big @SS dog  :(, but if you don't want one, they (pet stores) do sell some thing that keeps cats away. Its like a spray that they are apparently afraid of. My parents put it on the furniture to keep them from scratching it and they would go and smell it and walk away. You could possibly give that a shot.

Spraying orange or a citrus based cleaner that you can find at MOST STORES should keep most cats away.  My mom does not like cats and she sprays this around the base of her house and it keeps the cast away for about 2 months per aplication

I use a pole and strap system that forms a "tent" out of my cover, allowing rain to run off without pooling in the cover. Since the cover is "tented", there's no place a cat can jump/land on . I got the pole/strap system at Cabelas. Can't remember what the brand name is.     Happy fishing.

I have the same issue, the only problem is that it is my cat and the wife will not allow me to shoot it. :(

Many years ago a stray cat got up in my boat and used one of my seats for a scratching pole.

I am not going to reveal how I solved that problem, but it was permanent.

Racoon trap some kitty kibble if you catch it bring it to your local SPCA. Beware though ya might catch an unwanted target animal say a skunk and that could really be stinky!! :(

Fish everyday all day. Build small pond with an island on it, and then make a drawbridge to the island so that you can get your boat and trailer when you want it.  ;D

I don't know why cats love boats so much, but they do. My wife's cat had kittens in my bass boat one winter and some died >:(. I had to pull the carpet out of a storage locker to get the smell out. She had it spayed and then it got run over ;). I still haven't figured out how to keep them out. I may try the orange cleaner stuff if the tomcat she has now ever comes home.

If I ever saw the cat I would happily go that route.

I have heard that mixing a solution of vinegar and water, then spray areas you want to deter the cats.  BB gun is positive results but if you don't want harm the animal, if it enters your property blast it with a water hose!

Mothballs work great for all pests..... heck if you put them under a tightly covered boat it works great as a person repellant if you stick your head in and take a big whiff  :(  that stuff burns your lungs.

Try placing them even around the wheels, works great to keep mice from climbing up.  (Becareful you dont have any kids or pets that may eat them up)

I got the same problem but its my cat, when we had our child the cat went outside, now the little fart climbs up beside my console under the boat cover to get out of the elements,i am forever having to vacuum the carpet and the underside of the cover is filthy,i cringe that when it gets warmer and i pull it out from under the carport and remove the cover that the carpet will be stained by his dirty feet,if so me and him are going for a LONG ride with only me returning! ;):(
