Yamaha 4strokes engine life

Featured Replies

Dear everyone,

I am new to this sport.  I would like to start a new project of putting a decent boat.  I am looking to get a used engine to put on an old boat I current have.  It's a 50hp yamaha 4strokes engine, 08' version with approx 500 to 800hrs on it.  I just wonder what is a useful life any particular engine before it needs an overhaul.

Any help is appreciated very much.

Respectfully,

hdt

Hi,

I would have the compression checked and if its good, I would then give it a full tune up even replacing the impeller. That way you know for sure it is "fresh" for you.  Those motors will last forever. I had a Yami 25hp 4 stroke.  Unbelievably smooth, very reliable, always started on the first turn of the key....even after sitting all winter.  I think you are making a good choice.

Good luck!

Wow. A 2008 with 500-800 hours?

Thats like 1.5 - 2 hours a day running, 7 days a week, for a whole year.

That is alot of hours for a 1 year old engine.

I was told by a outboard mechanic that 1000 hours is the typical hour lifespan for a 2 stroke motor if it is properly maintenanced.

For a 4 stroke, Im not sure.I would definately have a mechanic check that motor top to bottom. If it was me, I would look for something with less hours.

Just my $.02

Hi,

Thanks very much for your inputs.  This engine comes from a dealer with a warranty of 60 days. I will check into it with further details.

Thanks again,

hdt
