Is my line too heavy?

Featured Replies

Hey guys quick question.  I ordered an extra spinning reel.  It’s the President PressP30 Pflueger spinning reel.  When I ordered it I also ordered 10lb Braid.  When I received them in the mail I was mistakenly given 40lb braid.   I don’t like to send things back, because that just means I have to wait even longer.... so with that being said, the reel says it holds 160 yards of 10lb braid.  Can I spool this 40lb braid on this reel or will it cause more harm than good?  It’s going to be on a 7foot rod with medium heavy action, mainly use for either jigging, or top water action.

Ya, 40# braid is much too heavy for a spinning reel...especially a Pres-30 which is a 2500 size spool. I'd contact the seller via e-mail...maybe they'll fast-ship you the line you actually ordered.

What’s the downside though?  What would actually happen if I used it?

Well, using the line calculator - you'd only be able to spool up about 40 yards...so long casts will empty the spool

True.  To be fair though I probably won’t cast it to far.  I do have a bait caster I can put it on.  I’m just not a fan of bait casters at all.

40 yard casts on a spinning reel isn't hard to do...I do 40-50 yard casts with my Trion-30 (next one down from the Pres) without trying too hard. If I 'bomb' it...80-90 yards isn't out of the question. I'd seriously consider contacting them - they might send the 10# without asking for the 40# back - then put that 40# on the BC.

Thanks for the input.  I’ll probably do that.  I’ve been trying off and on to get better with bait casters.  I just understand the brakes, and the tension knobs etc.  I wouldn’t mind using that line on the BC for crank fishing or something.  I’m typically a worm guy, and have stuck with it since it’s tried and true (for me) but this year I’ve been expanding my horizons and ordering new gear and trying to fit everything right.  Top water has been fun, but I noticed using frogs over heavy grass and pads and weeds isn’t ideal with my typical 6-10lb test mono.  Same thing with jig flipping.  Thank you for the input though much appreciated!
