I understand why guys like bigger handles on their bait cast reels when throwing a large spinner bait, deep crank bait or any other bait that creates a lot of resistance during the retrieve. Are there certain applications where a smaller handle would be nice for whatever reason? Some companies from the factory might have different length handles in the same model depending on the gear ratio and such. Just curious if for bottom contact the smaller ones might better or if it did not matter much.

By smaller do you mean a standard handle or an aftermarket smaller handle (not sure if these exist)? 

 

In either case, I myself don't make handle changes. Ill swap gears before switching handles.
