PROBLEMS WITH AN OLD JOHNSON 90 HP

Featured Replies

THIS WEEKEND MY MOTOR RAN GREAT FOR A WHILE (5 MINUTES OR SO) THEN BOGGED DOWN AND WOULD ONLY RUN AT IDLE SPEED.  STOPPED AND FISHED FOR A WHILE AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP AND RAN GREAT FOR ANOTHER 5 MINUTES OR SO AND DID SAME THING.   I DECIDED TO GET BACK TO RAMP BEFORE I GOT STRANDED.   WHEN I GOT CLOSE TO RAMP, I STOPPED AND CUT IT OFF, RESTARTED AND IT RAN GREAT FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS THEN BOGGED DOWN AGAIN, REPEAT, REPEAT.

I AM GUESSING WATER IN THE FUEL LINE BUT AM INTERESTED IN ANY OTHER INTERPRETATIONS OF THE PROBLEM.

MOTOR IS AN OLDER 90 HORSE JOHNSON 4 CYL. 2 STROKE AND I MIX THE OIL IN WITH THE GAS. 50 TO 1.

THANKS FOR ANY THOUGHTS,

NATE >:) >:( >:(

Is it possible it was overheating? Could you tell if the motor was peeing?

I had a similar problem once but was able to cure it by repeatedly squeezing the bulb.  Come to find out, the bulb/fuel line was sucking air.  Once I replaced it, everything was fine.

Never under estimate the importance of the bulb.  I hear Yamaha has specific requirements to use nothing but a Yamaha bulb.  My bud got a bulb from Wally world on his 200hp Johnson and it caused all kinds of problems.

I had a mercury do the same thing it was the fuel lines were weak and sucking together.
