Refurbished Prop?

Featured Replies

Broke a prop last weekend on Patoka Lake in southern Indiana. Should have had backup but didn't. Anyways, lookin to get a refurb. Anyone go this route? It is for a 50 HP Merc on a 07 Tracker 170. Do I need a new hub or can I go just prop? Lots of questions I know. Any and all help appreciated.

You would have to inspect your hub... it depends on the type.  Make sure its not torn up.  My turbo prop has one of the nylone style that are supposed to strip out before tearing out your lower unit.  But I think some are still metal, either of which could break or strip in a large impact.  If all looks well I would think you'd be OK to go.  I have had a refurbished stainless done before and it was perfectly OK.  Never have did any aluminum one though.

How was the fishing down there at Patoka by the way?  I have been looking at going down there the last few weeks but havent got the chance.

you will not be able to look at the hub and tell if it is bad unless it has begun to twist out. Carry it to a prop shop and have it checked. There is nothing wrong with a rebuilt prop if it is done by a well known, reputable shop. Lots of people have thier new props tweeked while they are searching for a little more mph

if you take it to a good shop they will check the hub while they are rebuilding the prop. and fix it. atlest the great shop I go to does that. and a re-fab prop ) at least an alum. one) is just as good as a new one.

It's gonna depend on how bad you damaged it, it may not be able to be redone.  I've never dealt with a prop shot that replacing the hub was not stand procedure when they repaired a prop.
