Need help with fly rod

Featured Replies

I bought the following reel seat for my fly rod. (Dimensions available)

Now I need a grip for it. I was thinking of a half wells grip, but I am not sure how the two will for together and I don't know if I would need to buy a certain one or not. I have seen some grips on websites come precut and that is causing some confusion for me.

Would someone with a little bit of experience building fly rods be able to help me out? Is there a certain size or handle thing to factor in or will the seat just fit pretty much any handle I pick out?

Thanks

The reel seat has a recessed hood that fits into the cut out of a fly handle. The hood diameter is 21 mm or 0.826 inches. Make or buy a fly handle that can accept the hood size. The blank butt diameter should not be larger than 14 mm.

If you can't find a precut grip buy one without the cut and have the supplier cut it for you. REC has very nice grips and cut them to my specs last I ordered one, but I also bought their reel seats. I'm sure Batson makes a reel seat also with that cut out, I'm pretty sure the size 7 reel seats come with the correct cut out.

One of my projects over the winter is to replace the grip on my 6 wgt.   The current grip is a half wells with an insert.  The insert has sort of disintegrated over the years and grip itself has a loose front half.  I was thinking of getting another half wells with the cut out but decided to go with just the plain half wells without the cut out.  It's comes down to your preference.
