Wiring for Minn Kota Edge 40

Featured Replies

Hey guys I got my new trolling motor and went to mount it on the boat.  I noticed a attention sticker that says I need to wire a 60 amp circut breaker.  I had a hand controlled before and never seen that sticker before.  So I used that motor connected directly to the battery.  Does this mean I can't do this with my new motor?  If so can you guys help me I don't know sh&** about wiring. Just tell me the best thing to do in the situation

Thanx

While it is advisable to install a circuit breaker, it isn't absolutely necessary.

Not advisable to forego the breaker.

A short can easily start a fire.  The cable to the battery can get hot enough to melt and ignite the insulation.

Had it happen to a truck I owned years ago.  Apparently the insulation on the positive cable chaffed through where it was clamped to the chassis.

The cable heated up, and ignited.  That ignited other flammable materials under the hood.

The fire department extinguished it.

Resulted in a bit of scorching on the hood, and some melted plastic and rubber components under the hood.

While it did not look bad, the truck was totalled.

The cable between the chassis and the starter was not damaged.

While the chances are nearly nil that you'll have a problem, if you do, it will void the warranty, and any other liabilities the manufacturer might have.

can you exsplane a simple and easy way to install a breaker?

I bought a 12V/50AMP In line circuit breaker off of eBay for under 10 bucks shippped. They are made for golf carts and electric wheelchairs. Installation couldn't be simpler you cut your positive lead near the battery and install this in line one side to battery and the other to the motor. They look like this and work great.

I thought if you cut anything it voids the warrenty for the motor

You install it between the battery and the TM.  You do not have to cut into anything and void the warranty.

Set your battery where you want it, cut 10-12 inches of wire for the positive terminal.  Connect the wire to both the battery and the circuit breaker.  Connect the remaining wire from the circuit breaker to the TM.  Connect the negative wire directly from the battery to the TM.

This site has a PDF for another brand of TM, but it has a diagram for the wiring on page 5 of 21.
