My first bass boat

Featured Replies

I am considering buying a 2000 17 ft javelin 90 hp 2 stroke johnson....Does anyone have any feedback on that model javelin or johnson?

Feedback on the top end speed on that boat? It seems to be a heavy boat 1290 i believe (motor and boat, at least thats what NADA states...not sure if 1290 is just boat or boat and motor)  it has 12 Volt 44 pounds of thrust on the front trolling...is this enough for this boat?

Thx for the feedback

I had that motor on my last (first) bassboat. My boat was older, and pretty likely heavier, but with me 'n another guy, the motor was good for around 42-46mph. By the way, I believe the NADA weight you referred to is boat only. Enjoy the experience, my friend.

did the johnson do you well?  Would you stick with johnson outboards?

Have the compressin checked or a leakdown test done on the motor.  Compression should be approx 90 pounds on a warmed engine and all four cylinders should not vary more than five pounds.   Those are very good motors if it has not been used up, so be sure to have it checked out.  Also figure on having the water pump impeller replaced.  That's a very neglected item.

The boats are good boats, built at the Stratos factory with just as much attention to quality layup as the Stratos, just not a lot of the extra's to keep the cost down and pretty sure that year model still had the wood transome and floor so have those checked, it's very easy for a wet transome to be rotten in nine years.

Have it checked out and if things check out good, should make you a good boat.  If it has a good stainless prop suited for that hull, I would think high 40's, maybe low 50's for top speed.

thx that is good info to know....

I believe its a composite make up and not wood....it says composite hull or something on the side of the boat

u said approx 90 pounds, is it better to be on the higher or lower side of 90? Is there a way to tell approx hours on a engine by a compression test?

What is a leakdown test?

Question 1. NO

Question 2. Leak down is a test where you pump up the cylinder and see if it will hold  pressure. This will let you know if the rings are allowing any pressure loss. A good set of rings will hold a steady pressure. It will also let you know if the cylinder walls are good to go and if any gaskets are bad or if the head has issues. The pressure will escape at the weakest point.

Do you need to have both done?  Or is a compression test good enough?

Thx guys!
