Diamond Jigs

Featured Replies

I hear a lot about these from saltwater fishermen but I never had a rod stout enough to cast them until this year. I bought some Ahi Assualt Jigs for the coming season. Any thoughts on them?

From what I read a good technique is to pop the rod, make a couple cranks and let them drop on a slack line. How are you fishing them?

Pretty much fished them as you describe except my line was never totally slack.  Free spool with my thumb slowing them a bit so I could feel any hits.  But that was in salt.  I'm usually rockfishing so I bump the rocks to get noticed, then pop and reel as you say.

Freshwater I have tried all kinds of the same type and never had luck.  Not sure why not.

I was planning on using these in saltwater and had visions of trying them in freshwater. You answered my question about trying them in freshwater...?

Thanks for the reply and technique. I'll try that this summer in the surf.

Cyclops Jigf?! ? ... LOVE IT!!

Southern Maine Coast.

I'm here all week!  After further review, and checking out Ahi Assault jigs,  me thinks you could probably tell me more about real fishing.  Those would work for rockfish but I suspect you are going for tuna, eh?

Stripe Bass, Bluefish and Black Sea Bass are what I’m targeting.

Along with the Black Sea I’ll probably catch Cod, Cunner, Pollack, possibly Haddock, Monkfish, Spiny Dogfish and Cusk but I doubt the last 4 will be in the areas I’m currently mapping.

Are you fishing diamond jigs with treble hooks or single @Guitarfish? Dressed hook?

I was doing more research and it seems like a single hook with a surgical tube dressing it is SOP for the species I'm targeting. I added tubes to 2 of them, really changes the lures profile.

Just wanted to get your opinion.

Yes to both versions.  I used to use them as they came with the trebles but hanging up was common.  When the version with hooks at the top eye came along I switched.  I use a two hook version tied with heavy braid.  The tube dressing may or may not be required, but consider the toothiness of the target fish or the chance of contacting the bottom and fraying the braid.  It would only take a moment to add the tubing. (Which you did).  You can use heat shrink tubing too.

I bought a bunch of used 10oz and up jigs recently for a song.  They have rusty trebles mostly so I will be changing them out.

Let me know how you make out.

About the ones that have a hook tied at the line tie @Guitarfish. From what I read Japanese anglers kinda started that with great success, what’s the theory behind that?

I’m wondering if another mod needs to be made to the ones I bought? Thankfully I’m in winter mode. ?

BTW, really appreciate the info here. You have no idea. Many thanks.
