Fixing damaged hull/keel

Featured Replies

Any idea how I can fix this damage to my aluminum hell/keel?  I hit an under water piling at full speed today and did the damage.  The boat does not leak but I am concerned because of the location of the damage.  The aluminum got ripped right off like I used a can opener on it.  Any help would be appreciated.

rondef, nice picture, but what am I supposed to be looking at.  I looks like someone draw a nice pattern on your keel with a Sharpie.

There is approximately a one foot long piece of the allumium keel cover that got ripped off of the boat.

The keel appears to be riveted on.

You should be able to have a single piece formed to fit over the damaged section.  Any metal working/fabricating shop should have the shears and brakes to make a close fitting piece.

Slip it over the keel and weld it in place.  That assumes the aluminum is thick enough to weld.

The keel serves two purposes, one to stiffen the hull, and the other to keep the boat on track.

I'd seek a metal working shop, and rely on their expertise.  Shop around and get some estimates, and references.

X2 I have enlarged this picture up to 500% and I can't see what you are talking about. I see some marks but I can't see where something is missing

That entire section of the keel cover (where it looks like it  has a saw tooth pattern) is missing, a section approximately 1 foot long was torn off the boat.

Go to your local hardware store and get you a peice of aluminum sheeting that when shaped properly it will cover both sides of that area.  Put on the correct amount 5200 (or use the glue of your choice) and press the patch in place and secure it till it sets up good.
