Seminole, Florida Fishing Tips

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm going to be in Seminole, Florida March 22-26, 2021 visiting my daughter and grandchildren. I plan on packing an 8wt or 9wt fly rod, and a spinning rod. Being from central Indiana, what I need is some general direction for places to fish, and what types of bait, flies, or lures to throw in the area. I should mention that I'll be bank fishing or wading as I won't have access to a kayak or boat.

If you'd rather email me directly, my email is FredMcIntire@Gmail.Com.

Thank you,

Fred

I don't know that particular area, but one thing I can tell you is you won't be wading in the freshwater!

Good morning,

Good point ! I probably should have been more clear that the wading would be beach wading. I don't want to end up being a tasty but tough dinner morsel for a 'gator.

Yeah, when I bank fish I wear rubber mid calf boots just to get through the mud. I sneak up on gators all the time that I never even see. I don't know who jumps higher?  ?

Can’t really speak to bass fishing there, if you’re set on bass you could always drive over to the Tampa Bypass Canal. A lot of walking on riprap, but there are some good fish.

If you look for pull offs on the road next to grass flats/mangroves in that area you’ll have a good shot at trout, potentially reds and snook as well.

Your probably about 1.5 months from the beach snook action on fly, but I’ve heard some folks say further south they were already catching them in February. Seems early to me but maybe I’m wrong.

Try the causeway to Honeymoon Island just outside of Dunedin, there is a grass flat on the north side and it is easy wading.

Also, grass flats around Fred Howard park.

Incoming high tide is your best bet.

I don't know much about flies, but anything shrimp will catch anything saltwater.  For regular light tackle, 3" gulp on a jig head, or a circle hook with live shrimp.  You will get eaten up by pinfish with the shrimp so I suggest having both available in case you end up in the middle of them (you can also turn them into bait).  You can also use a popping cork or just free line with the shrimp.

Also, you can saltwater wade or bank fish without a license.

Spring breakers are here and it is busy, but you should find some quiet in the AM, especially on the north side of the Honeymoon Island causeway.  Most people hang out on the south side.

Good luck.
