Kayak tips

Featured Replies

Just bought a fishing 10 feet kayak. Plan on steering clear of fast moving water so hesitant on the James river was planning on doing some research to see if I could float from pony pasture to reedy creek once it warms up. Anyone have suggestions on where to take it? Or tips and musts. Plan on getting a whistle and will be wearing a life jacket of course. Never fished off a kayak any dos and donts. Was also thinking ancarrows landing and have heard good things about the Anna river. Does anyone have a launch spot there? Thanks

Best bet is to look at the DGIF site. They will list a lot of places to launch. It will also give species in each body of water.

I don’t mess with the downtown Richmond areas myself. I go to the launches upstream, less people and better fishing.

one piece of advice I will give is don’t plan on anchoring in current until you are more experienced. If your anchor setup isn’t right things can get dicey real quick.

https://www.takemefishing.org/ lists federally maintained bodies of waters as well as which species of fish they hold. It can be useful for finding new places to fish.

They all do that...

Keep a fixed blade knife attached to your body, that you can reach with either hand in case of emergency.
