Fogging Outboard Motor

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I have a question about this.

I have a 40HP Mercury Outboard what I need to winterize.

My questing i how much of this fogger am I supposed to spay into the engine?

Here is what I did:

Added Fuel Stabilizer,

Ran the motor for about 5 minutes

Sprayed a few times in Carb(for about 2 seconds each)

Pulled the Fuel line off

Sprayed in Carb until it killed the engine.( was only a few seconds before it died)

Is this sufficient?

Thanks

I would take the spark plugs out and spray into the holes as well. Then, while the plugs are out, spin the flywheel by hand.

Oh Yes, I forgot to mention the spark plugs. I didn't do that yet because I didn't have the proper socket to fit.

As for the fly wheel, are you referring to the propeller?  If not I don't know where the flywheel is..

Thanks for your help

The fly wheel in on the top of the motor. If you motor has electric start it has teeth where the starter engages. If not it is just a round "wheel" on the end of the crank shaft.

Hey Harpoon. I grew up in Mass! I also just winterized my first engine this weekend, a 40hp Johnson, and here is what I learned:

Start fogging the carbs in short blasts, increasing the amount a little each time. Get the motor smoking. Then stall it with a big blast. @ 1/4 can for a 40hp.

As far as the stabilizer goes, I was told to run the engine 15 minutes to make sure the stabilized fuel gets through your lines, fills the bulb and then, of course, into your engine. I was also told not to disconnect the line.

Paul, thank you very much for getting that picture for me. I completely understand now. I really appreciate it.

One last question I promise.  I am still not sure how much of the can of fog I am supposed to be spraying into the engine. 1/4 of the can? 1/2 the can or the whole can.

Thanks paul, I really appreciate your help.

Hey Fishcat, thank so much for this information and you answered my last question for me too about how much fogger to use.

So I only ran the motor for about 5 minutes after stabilizer so with all this awesome information I will start the process over again just so I feel more comfortable about it.

You guys rock on this site.  Thanks so much.

A friend has a lawn mower shop and told me not to run an engine dry for storage. Use fuel stabilizer and run it up into the carbs. He said varnish is more likely to form in a dry environment.

I'm not sure why fogging oil would be run through a carb while running. I would think plug pulling and fog spraying the cyc would be enough.
