Lakemaster card?

My  buddy got a new boat and took the Lakemaster cards out of his old one.  He had a gen 2 and a gen 3 cards in his units.  On his new boat he has 2 gen 3 units and only the gen 3 card works in both units.  Is this right; is the gen 2 card compatible with only gen 2 units?

    Should not matter. My lakemaster cards are gen 2 and 6 years old. They both work in my newer gen 3 units.
