Gonna be new to a depth finder this year.Ive used one in the past but very little.Was wondering if I could get some

pointers.Like what does cover look like on it.How far around the boat doesn it show or does it just show whats under the boat?

Newer technology by Humminbird and now copied by Lowrance gives you the option to "see" a couple hundered feet from each side of your craft and that view is somewhat video quality in comparison to the down looking, cone shaped, sonar pulse.

Here is a "cover" view with traditional sonar and the newest down looking technology on the same screen that I took yesterday. It's not the best it can be since I am just learning how to get the best unit settings.

The posted picture is a single (picture) screen shot showing regular downlooking sonar above Down Imaging sonar just as it appears on a Humminbird Side Imaging unit. The Down Imaging feature was just available a week ago. That feature allows you to determine what the returns are as displayed on regular down looking sonar. You don't have to guess is it trees, fish, suspended solids, bubbles, etc.

Lowrance HDS units have that capability also.

The Side Imaging and Structure Scan horizonal returns are displayed from top to bottom like this:
