Ultimate Finesse Setups: Dropshot (Daiwa Tatula Lt / Shimano Stradic + St. Croix Rod)

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have recently had much success with dropshotting since all of the fish appear to be at the bottom of the water column here in SoCal harbors.

I am bank fishing rocky harbor coastlines in SoCal. I had crazy success one day using 4lb Seaguar Invizx fluoro, I caught a fish or had a bite on nearly every cast. I also snapped my line 5x that night and have never had that happen before...So I am convinced the low test line was the reason for the success, but I can't handle having my line snap that frequently...

What combination would you guys make with the given gear I have?

My idea was to was to make an ultimate finesse (dropshot/C-rig/ned rig) setup:

Daiwa Tatula LT 2500 w/8lb Suffix high-viz braid and 6lb Seaguar Invizx on a 7'0 MXF St. Croix Avid Inshore.

My other setup is: (not sure what it is specialized for, but I love this setup!)

Shimano Stradic 2500 CI4+ w/10lb Suffix low-viz braid and 8lb Seaguar Invizx on the 7'6 MLF St. Croix Avid Inshore

My reel options:

Daiwa Tatula LT 2500

Daiwa Tatula LT 4000

Shimano Stradic 2500 CI4+

Shimano Stradic FL 4000 FL

Rod Options (all spinning):

7'0 MXF St. Croix Avid Inshore

7'6 MLF St. Croix Avid Inshore

6'8 MLF Legend Tournament Bass*

6'3 MXF Legend Tournament Walleye Series

Line Options:

Seaguar Invixz 4, 6, and 8 lb (leader)

Suffix 8lb high viz or 10lb low-viz green

You might as well check out San Diego forum, there are ton of ppl there dropshot from either float tube or bank for bay bass. I myself don’t like FC for dropshot especially when used as leader. I’d prefer my bait to have a little bit of buoyancy from mono and FC trend to have problem with knot especially smaller diameter 4-6lb. Where was your line snap? If you convinced that smaller line is key to your success, try 2-4lb Copolymer or similar diameter. I’m really doubt if it is the claim of FC invisibility.

Spotted Bay Bass or Calico Bass ( salt water coastal harbors) are not line shy fish. Fishing around concrete pier pillar or breakwater rip rap that are covered with razor sharp mussels and barnacles you need a high abrasion resistant line li’e a Copolymer.

If you think .008/.009 diameter leader use 5 or 6 lb Maxima Ultra Green Copolymer.

Saint Croix Victory VS70MF with Shimano Vanford 2500 is an excellent combo for fresh or salt water drop shot use.

Great advice! Thanks for your input! I don't know why the 4lb really seemed to do something for me that night. Do you have any tip on cadence for dropshot? I try to keep it as still as possible and just keep the line tight. That's been my only method so far.

Hm honestly I think it was just abrasion from the fish teeth or structure. But my line snapped so much. It is also incredibly hard to see - the 4lb Invisix that is. I can't recall where every line snap was though. Good tips and thank you for the advice! I see, so mono gives the bait some buoyancy? I didn't realize that!
