Tatsu Dave
Well got the stands ready with all locks, cables, seats, tools, and ratchet straps. Son is a powerhouse for stand work and he's got a vested interest, "his" stand sits watching a grown over bog and flowage. He's got deer there for four years straight and is hoping for another. We have a great processor that does sweet sticks and ground deer with just a little pork for the dryness. Jerky is unbelievable...great to eat when fishing or anytime really ? Anybody else hunt stands? We use ladder stands that sit about 12'-15' and have poly boat seats to sit in, getting too old to stillhunt anymore. We have always used an elevated stand. We hunt a big public national forest opening weekend (early November) and then on private agricultural land after that for the remainder of the 9 day season. About 5 years ago, my Father bought an enclosed Stump Stand for the private land we hunt. Its a molded plastic thing on a 5 foot deck with sliding plexiglass windows. He has a 360 degree swivel chair in it. It keeps him out of the elements. The problem with it is that you can't hear nearly as good and the shooting windows limit your shooting radius. One year we had a warm couple of days and that thing baked in the sun too. It turns into an oven on a warm afternoon. I hunt in a hang on stand or a ladder stand. They are both open air stands. The hang on stand is up much higher in the tree. I have it at 25 feet and I'm over 6 feet tall, so I'm over 31 feet up when I stand. Its not for the faint of heart. I'm still young and athletic and safe so for now it offers a big height advantage. The ladder stands I rotate through are extremely comfortable. They have the mesh fold down seats, back rest, and arm rests. Plus a nice big platform for my feet. I put a piece of carpet on the platform to keep things quiet and help retain heat. The ladder stands are 16 feet high and I rotate through 3 of them based on what direction the wind is. When I first started deer hunting, we bough cheap ladder stands that were like 100 bucks. They were very uncomfortable to sit in for any length of time. Once we upgraded to nice ones with a real back rest that made a world of difference. Don't ever buy one that is designed to use the tree trunk as a back rest!
Tatsu Dave
Sounds like you got it down pat. Comfort is everything now and keep's you sitting a lot longer. Just moved one this morning, didn't like the spot. Now I'm hooking up the boat to go fish w/son this afternoon to evening. Things get busier this time of year but it all comes together. If you're comfortable, you can sit longer and increase your patience. And I have found that my success in this activity is directly tied to the amount of time I can sit there and be patient.
