Fish finder ????

Featured Replies

Hey all!

I just bought another bass boat a couple months ago and have a small issue. The boat came with new Humming Bird 100 SX fish finders. I want to upgrade to a couple of Lowrance units this week. The one on the bow has the transducer mounted on the trolling motor but the one at the steering wheel has no transducer that i can find! The boat use to have one of those old dash mount flasher depth finders. I have searched everywhere and cannot find a transducer for it. It works fine but i don't know how. Could it be hooked to the front transducer as well? Is there anything i am missing?

It's probably using a transducer that's mounted in the bilge.  You didn't mention if you looked inside the boat for it.

On a fiberglass boat, you can glass in a transducer to the bottom of the boat.  The acoustic properties of fiberglass are similar enough to water that your depthfinder isn't affected.

Look for a small puck glued to the hull somewhere around the aft bilge.  That might do it for you.

The boat use to have one of those old dash mount depth finders that look like a speedometer gauge. They seem to be controlled with one single hose like that on a speedometer as well. I have searched everywhere and cannot find a transducer for it. It works fine but i don't know how. Could it be hooked to the front transducer as well? Is there anything i am missing?

flashers as far as i know use a transducer like a fish finder. id follow the wire.

You know, you just may be onto something. I looked over the bilge area again and found a small circle shaped thing with a single hose coming from it. Could this be it? I always thought it was something to do with the bilge pump. There is definitely nothing outside the boat.

That's it! You have found your transducer.

Now, as far as making that 'ducer work for your Lowrance units...

I can't help you there.

Should i remove this transducer when i remove the fish finder? Can it even be removed, looks glassed in there?

Use a piece of wood and a large hammer. That should do it. If you cannot get to it just leave it where it is. Will hurt nothing.

You could also use a small grinder and cut it along one edge. Just take care to not cut into the original glass in the floor of the boat.

I think i will leave it be for now. Don't want to damage anything!
