Good rod for curado mgl 150

Featured Replies

Im new to baitcasters and wanted to jump in. I have only used spinning reels and wanted to open myself to more gear.

I currently have a vanford 3000 and a 6’9” medium zodias. My intentions are to use this for worm and finesse but have been throwing everything With it.

I purchased a curado mgl 150 6.2:1

And I was pairing it with a curado 7’2” medium heavy and I was planning on using this for everything other then works. Crank baits. Spinners. Click baits. Jigs. Etc.  So my question is this the right stiffness for the application?  The heaviest thing I would throw is a whopper plopper and that’s only a 1/2oz

any insights recommended.

I dont see why it wouldn't work. Sounds like a pretty decent combo. Should work well for those applications minus the crankbaits. I more limber rod would work a little better for cranking but it will do in a pinch.

Would my zodias be better for the crank air?

https://dobynsrods.com/product/sa-684c/   This is the rod I use  for the same thing you want for. I am using the same reel you are going to put on the rod you purchase. (oops mine is a XG) I Have fished this combo at least a dozen times. The biggest Bass on this combo is 6 lb 2 oz. I fish on Santee Cooper & fish this rig in 10ft or less. This is a good combo for spinnerbaits & chatterbaits in light to moderate cover. It's a 4 power rod.

Funny you mention the 6'8" Sierras. I have a 683 and a 684 and I like them a lot. I got a SLX MGL reel last week and had never fished one of the MGL spools. I put it on my Dobyns 683, rigged it with a 2.8 Keitech on an underspin, and caught a 4+ pound bass on my first cast.

I did everything wrong. I hadn't tightened down the drag at all. I did eventually get the hook set, and then promptly let the fish run under the dock I was standing on and get into the pilings. I managed to pull him out and get him out of the water. Bent the hook out, too. I credit "having the right equipment" because I was not at my best in that moment.
