Gear Ratios

Featured Replies

I currently have 3 “high speed” reels in my arsenal and I’m trying to decide what to use each for. I have a 7.4 Lews tournament SP, Lews 8.3 lfs, and a 13 fishing 8.1. I’m wanting to use one for frogging, heavy flipping and pitching jigs and buzzbaits, one for Texas rig and light flipping and pitching, and one for top waters and jerk Baits. Which reel ratio should I use for each ?
Thanks

I recently bought a 8.3:1 LFS reel. to replace my jig reel. I love it, but now I wish I had one for my frog rod. For these techniques, once the lure is out of the zone, I like to quickly reel up and get another cast to the strike zone. I have 7.5:1 on all other BC combos. My philosophy is you can always reel a faster reel slower if needed, but you can't reel a slow reel a lot faster without expending more energy.

I guess what I’m really asking is in what order would you place each techniques importance of having a high ratio ? I was thinking frog/heavy jugs/buzzbaits with the 8.3-1. The Texas rig and light jigs with the 8.1-1 and the top water/jerkbait with the 7.4-1

I'm still fishing 5:1 and 6:1 bait-casters...they do okay for how I fish. They are all 20+ years old...

Good luck!

It is unlikely you will be able to notice a significant difference in those reels when actually fishing. Maybe the 7 compared to the 8s but still probably not much.

I would use the 7 for the rod that would see the most moving baits, and match the 8s up based on fit/feel (or even cosmetics) and fish.
