Regulators

Featured Replies

I have a 93 200hp Merc on my boat that I posted back in the fall that it siezed up.  I had the engine rebuilt.  The mechanic used some of the parts that were still good from the siezed motor.  He told me in the fall that my regulators were ok but thought I should replace them before spring.  My question is how important are they.  If they go bad then I can always charge my starter bat with a trickle charger or on-board marine charger.  Or are they needed, I have put alot of money into this engine and feel that I should probably replace but don't know if I should or not.  Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Jenga

Definitely replace them! No use putting all that $ into it and then shorting yourself with bad regulators. They can cause your battery and stator to go bad. Trust me, a stator is not cheap. When mine were bad the boat would only run WOT for a couple minutes and than shut down on its own. They lead to other problems if not corrected soon.

What if I bought an on board marine charger would it be ok for me to still use my old regulators and if the starter bat doesn't get a full charge from the engine then my charger will do it.  Or should I just replace the regulators and the onboard marine charger.

thanks,

Jenga

i think if you think they are bad or going bad then replace them, either way it will save you money, time and effort and may keep you from getting stranded out on the water(is worth that risk)
